Solar Wind Temperature

This section provides information on the solar wind temperature at Earth during a particular solar rotation. The solar wind parameters can be used to identify the periods which drive enhanced geomagnetic activity.

The analysis is based on the OMNI database of upstream solar wind parameters produced by NASA.

A particular solar rotation can be selected from the pull down menu. The time interval display cannot be edited directly. A range can be specified that is used to identify intervals where the solar wind temperature is within those limits. Horizontal red lines may be shown on the plot indicating the time intervals that match the user criteria. Vertical dotted lines may be displayed indicating where the current time would map assuming recurrence of the solar wind temperature between solar rotations.

The mouse can be used to zoom the time selection (the Y scale is fixed). To zoom out extend the zoom range beyond the full plot range. A zoom range fully before(left)/after(right) of the plotted time interval will select a range of the same duration before/after the current plot. Pressing submit will recalculate the display for the new interval.

Show options

The following options allow some limited tailoring of the display elements.

Don't show the initial title
Don't show the time series plot
Don't show intervals on the plot
Show intervals outside rather than inside the range
   Invert the list of intervals
Don't show the current Carrington phase
Don't show the stats table
Don't show the list of intervals
   Format list as linked VOTable
Show the onion skin plot
(Plot as a function of solar rotation with the line fading for older data)
Include a plot of Dst.
(Intervals with Dst < -50 nT are shown with a green line). NB: The plot is actually of SYM-H as the de facto high-resolution Dst.

You can also quickly jump to another parameter for the current time interval using the following links (other options are not retained):-
